Why join yet another network?

Mastodon is part of the “fediverse”, a global network of independent servers called “instances”. That’s all I’m going to say about it in descriprion. You’ll find excellent articles in Wired and by Jeff Jarvis regarding details. I’m going to talk about the social aspects. I’ve been on Mastodon for over five years, and even longer on another federated service, Diaspora. We interviewed Mastodon creator Eugen Rochko about 5 years ago on our Visions Under Construction interactive podcast, which ended in 2019 after a 12-year run. I was impressed by Eugen as a person as well as his accomplishments as a programmer.

Because it’s based on protocols, much of the population of Mastodon instances are tech geeks, people who love coding and technology and science. Now that many more people are coming to explore it for obvious reasons, it is slowly…
