I think the turning point was when the people you follow who are in one area of interest and are brilliant at it, innovative even, begin sharing and retweeting links to political rants, regardless of which team they’re from. If you have to cull the only people worth reading, it is indeed the end.

I was Twitter user number 10,000 and some, 2006. At first, I didn’t understand the point of it. Then I started following people I knew. I created several accounts in order to not mix my interests. (I think that was before lists, which are a PITA to manage, anyway.) I built a following of real people, friends and those interested in my topic. Gradually, there it was: Suddenly people who hadn’t voted ever were political reshare pundits. Even if they’re 95% of the same opinions as me, this constant barrage was irritating at first, then depressing. I can’t understand why everyone doesn’t see it at the same time. And now, I am back to not understanding the point of it.
