Anecdotal datapoint:

I have lived in France and traveled Europe for over 40 years. I have never, ever had anyone give me attitude or have any negative reaction to me as an American. I have never witnessed anyone in public yell "Speak French!" at anyone, which is a common occurence in American cities. However, unless you have a function in the society of any country other than the one you were born in, and a decent command of the language, life will not be very fulfilling. Also, the right wing tending governments will crack down on immigration and visas, possibly within the next year or two. If you are considering a move to a new country, be sure to go visit there for a few months if at all possible.
